Head Coach: Nico Winograd
Nicolas “Nico” Winograd has been coaching US National teams at international events for the past 15 years and is currently head Opti coach at the San Francisco Yacht Club in Tiburon, CA. A native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Nico started sailing Optis at age seven and quickly moved into national and international competition. He qualified for and raced in six world championships in various junior and senior classes. In addition to a busy international racing schedule, Nico frequently serves as a trainer for various Olympic campaigns.
Green Fleet: Tom Coleman
"OptiGuy" Coleman has carved a niche as the Green Fleet guru of Optimist racing.
He has run the Green Fleet (learn-to-race contingent) at 15 of the past 17
Optimist Class National Championships. In 2004 he was chosen by the US Olympic
Committee as the Developmental Coach of the Year for Sailing. Tom's reputation
is that of making learning FUN for kids while emphasizing technical perfection
and sportsmanship. He has often been brought in to inspire kids to "want" to
race after they have been turned off or had a bad experience. "Knowing the
skills of the top sailors, I start kids off, first time in the boat, doing
things the right way. This avoids having to unlearn bad habits that are often
ingrained and hard to change. Parents get as much or more out of my clinics as
the young sailors!" reports Tom.
